What is a Cooperative?

A cooperative is a business owned by the people who receive its services and operated for the benefit of its member-owners, usually on a non-profit basis. Thousands of cooperatives are found in all types of American business. Agriculture, banking, insurance, electric, telephone and many other industries include successful member-owned cooperative businesses, which focus on service instead of profits.

National Co-op Month
Since 1930, October has been designated as National Co-op Month, providing co-ops with an opportunity to explain the co-op difference to their members. The story of how electric cooperatives were built -- not by big businesses looking for profit but by ordinary people working together -- makes the "Cooperative Way" an American success story we can all be proud of.

Join cooperatives across the country in promoting co-op principles and values this October. The materials and resources below can be run as-is, or used as a starting point in developing a message unique to your own co-op.
