Firelands Electric Cooperative is committed to providing safe and reliable utilities, and is also committed to participating in our community, educating the potential dangers of electricity. For this reason, your local Touchstone Energy® cooperative offers electrical safety education programs for organizations, civic groups, and first responders within and surrounding the cooperative's service territory that illustrate the potential dangers of electricity.

To ensure the safety of emergency first responders and the public, Firelands Electric offers training focused on working safely around power lines and the electric system when responding to emergencies. This is especially important around downed power lines, since they can still be energized. The cooperative’s safety program is designed to help emergency responders work safely in their jobs as they encounter electrical dangers involving vehicle accidents, fallen trees, or other rescue and emergency situations near the electric system. Attendees usually include local police, fire, EMT, utility personnel and Life Flight.

It arcs, sparks with flames, and teaches electrical safety! The electric cooperative’s live line safety demonstration trailer educates and prepares community members about electric lines and equipment hazards. Trained professionals simulate dangerous scenarios around live electric lines, while offering advice and warnings to onlookers.

The fully energized unit demonstrates improper generator connections and back feeding, step and touch potential, electric distribution system operations, conductivity of common items, misconceptions of electrical safety, what to do in case of an accident, including what causes common power outages. Other key topics covered include Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) — specifically the necessary amount of required PPE for employees to perform their duties safely. Click here to access helpful electrical safety information.

Firelands Electric Cooperative performs electrical safety demonstrations for local organizations and schools throughout the cooperative's service territory to show youth and adults how to be safe around electricity. Utilizing our tabletop safety display and live line trailer, we teach what to do if faced with everyday situations involving electrical hazards. To inquire about our electrical safety education programs for your organization or school district, contact us here or call 1-800-533-8658.
