Generlink Device

WHAT IS A GENERLINK?

Portable generators allow homeowners to power critical appliances such as furnaces, pumps, refrigerators, and freezers during a power outage. If you have a standby generator for emergencies, it is a National Electrical Code requirement that you also have an appropriate double-throw transfer switch installed. This protects you, your family, your home, and the cooperative's linemen.

The GenerLink is a common style of transfer device which allows you to connect a generator to your home's electrical system at the electric meter, making it easy to safely supply standby power to any circuit in your home. The device is a meter collar that is installed by behind your electric meter. Simply plug one end of the power cable into the GenerLink and the other end into your generator to connect.

OPTIONS

GenerLink devices cost between $650 and $900, and are available in the following sizes and cord lengths:

  • 30Amp Non-Surge (Item# MA23-N)

  • 30Amp Surge (Item# MA23-S)

  • 40Amp Non-Surge (Item# MA24-N)

  • 40Amp Surge (Item# MA24-S)

  • All units have the option of 20, 40, 60, 80, or 100 ft. GenerLok Power Cable

INSTALLATION

Members of the cooperative can purchase a GenerLink device and cable from the manufacturer, Global Power Products, or at retail stores. Since the device is a meter collar adapter installed by behind the electric meter, the electrical utility provider must be involved in pulling the meter, which can only be completed by the utility.

Firelands Electric Co-op will continue to install GenerLink transfer switches purchased by members, which includes installation and testing of the device.

PURCHASE INFORMATION

GenerLink transfer switches are available directly from the manufacturer at www.GenerLink.com or by calling 1-800-886-3837. Some home improvement stores, such as Home Depot, may sell GenerLink and other types of double-throw transfer switches for generators. GenerLink and other types of transfer switches need to be installed either by the electrical utility or a certified electrician.

For more information regarding generators and transfer switches, please contact our Member Services department here, or by calling 1-800-533-8658.
